Systems at Play : Designing Sustainable Consumption in Restaurants

Project Overview

This project explores the restaurant system through the lens of sustainable consumption. By analyzing real-world systems, identifying consumption patterns, and representing them visually, I translated complex insights into a game concept that promotes sustainable systems thinking.

The journey includes:

  • Mapping the restaurant system

  • Identifying unsustainable practices

  • Developing a causal loop diagram to understand feedback mechanisms

  • Designing a game concept to engage users in systems thinking

System Identification: Restaurant

I selected a family restaurant system for mapping, considering its interconnections between resources, stakeholders, and activities. The goal was to uncover how consumption patterns affect the three pillars of sustainability: Earth, Money, and People.

Game Concept Development

From system observation to interactive solution. I translated these insights into a game-based model that encourages users to experience and reflect on real-world system dynamics.

Game Type: Board Game
Title: Sustain Feast
👇 Gameplay Highlights:

  • Players take on roles: Owner, Chef, Waiter, Cleaner, Customer

  • Each round simulates a day in the restaurant

  • Players must manage resources wisely: control food portions, avoid wastage, and optimize customer service

  • Events (like “rush hour” or “equipment breakdown”) introduce challenges

  • Game ends with a sustainability score based on:

    • Resources saved

    • Customer satisfaction

    • Waste reduction

    • Team coordination

Why a Board Game?

  • Tangible elements = easier understanding of system flow

  • Collaborative play reflects real-life interdependence

  • Encourages dialogue and learning through scenarios

Designing for sustainability isn’t just about saving resources—it’s about redesigning how we think, act, and connect.
